Child support that actually reflects your family
Whether you need an order established, adjusted or enforced, we can help you get to a number that works.
A safe place to work through it
Divorce is hard. It is harder when children are involved. You want what is best for them, and so do we.
From our Hales Corners office we serve Milwaukee, Waukesha and the surrounding metro areas. Attorney Brittany Klaus Crothers has 17+ years of experience with child support matters.
How Wisconsin calculates child support
Wisconsin uses a percentage-of-income formula based on each parent's income and the number of children. As a guideline, support for one child may be set around 17% of the paying parent's income, and around 25% for two children.
Courts can also weigh other factors, including:
- The child's needs
- Each parent's ability to pay
- Health insurance costs
- Childcare expenses
When the other parent does not pay
If support is not being paid, there are real remedies. Wage garnishment takes the payment directly from a paycheck. Contempt-of-court proceedings can result in fines or jail. Other options include seizing assets or intercepting tax refunds.
We start with the least confrontational method that will work. The goal is not conflict, it is getting your child the support they are owed.
Do I need an attorney for a child support case?
Having a lawyer protects your financial position. Beyond establishing or enforcing an order, we can petition to modify an existing one, and we can establish paternity so that support, custody and visitation rights become available.
Wisconsin family law is genuinely complex. We know the regulations and the procedures, and we handle them so you do not have to.
